Commercial Plumbing Maintenance Tips From National Plumbers

Running water and flushing toilets are essential for employees and customers, so any problems with your plumbing system could temporarily close your business and cause you to lose money. If the problem is serious, like a burst pipe or leak, you could also be looking at costly plumbing repairs and water damage restoration services.

To keep the health of your commercial plumbing system in check and prevent problems before they occur, follow these plumbing maintenance tips from our network of national plumbers.

Check For Leaks

Regularly check under sinks, around toilets, and all other inside and outside spigots for leaks. Even seemingly minor leaks like a dripping faucet could indicate a more serious underlying problem with your water pressure or condition of your pipes, which could lead to a burst pipe if ignored. Leaks can also cause secondary issues like mold, rot, and rust – not to mention water waste and higher utility bills!

Appliances can also be a sneaky source of leaks. Check the water line and drain hose for any washing machines or dishwasher, and check under all appliances for leaks that could be damaging the floor and wall around them.

Check Water Pressure

Low water pressure is an annoying inconvenience for employees and customers. It may be due to outdated fixtures, a failing water pressure regulator, or clogged pipes that have accumulated calcium and other mineral deposits over the years. If you notice a decrease in water pressure, check all fixtures and appliances to see if the issue is isolated, or if the whole building is affected. This will help your plumber determine the best fix.

High water pressure, on the other hand, can be a more serious and timely problem. High water pressure not only wastes water and increases your water bill, but it can also damage appliances and significantly shorten their lifespan. The strain of high water pressure can also weaken plumbing pipes and fixtures, making them more susceptible to a burst pipe or leak.

Depending on the size and type of business you have, normal water pressure may range between 40 and 80 PSI. A national plumber will be able to give you a range so that you can monitor it between maintenance visits. Don’t ignore a change in water pressure; call a national plumber to identify and fix the problem before it causes damage.

Check Toilets

Toilets are one of those plumbing appliances that, when old and outdated, don’t function as efficiently anymore. Choose high-quality, high-efficiency toilets from a reputable manufacturer, have them regularly maintained, and have them replaced at the recommended age.

Additionally, provide clean waste bins at every toilet and post signage to discourage employees and customers from flushing anything other than toilet paper. A clogged toilet that isn’t immediately fixed can cause sewage backup and leaks, and close your business while cleanup and restoration services are completed.

Check Drains

Regularly fill sinks and tubs and monitor the drainage speed. Your national plumber may recommend an unclogging product to use as a preventative measure. If not, vinegar and hot water is an effective environmentally-friendly option that can be used monthly to break up and prevent clogs.

If a drain is draining very slowly, schedule a service call to have the drain snaked and unclogged before it becomes a more serious problem. Clogged drains that aren’t cleared can cause corrosion, leaks, and sewage backup that can result in more costly repairs in the long run.
