Industrial Maintenance. What Is It?

Industrial Maintenance. What Is It?

Industrial maintenance is a type of maintenance program which focuses on maintenance work that is conducted in manufacturing and production settings. It is also called plant maintenance because this type of maintenance pertains to plants as well. Maintenance programs are essential and many businesses require access to reliable industrial maintenance workers in order to remain functional.

Benefits of Industrial Maintenance

Aside from maintaining overall functionality, industrial maintenance programs also serve as a means of controlling costs. Maintenance programs in general concern themselves with preserving assets and creating an optimal work environment, both through the workers and the facility itself. Assets in the industrial setting can be highly specialized, so repair and maintenance work require industry knowledge and adequate training.

Industrial Maintenance Certification and Training

Aside from industry knowledge, jobs in industrial maintenance require basic technical skills and practical knowledge. Due to its essential nature, industrial maintenance workers need to demonstrate acquiring that knowledge and possessing general competency. They can prove their credibility in the industry by obtaining one of the following certifications:

  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician (CMRT), formerly called the Certified Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (CIMM) program. It is issued through the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP).
  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP), which is issued through the SMPR.  It can also be obtained from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which adheres to the standards set by the International Standardization Organization (ISO).
  • The International Maintenance Institute (IMI) Certification, issued through the  International Maintenance Institute. The IMI offers a wide variety of programs, with modules ranging from management skills to technical skills.

Types of Industrial Maintenance Workers

Typically, industrial maintenance workers can be categorized in one of two ways- a mechanic or an engineer. Industrial maintenance mechanics handle the repair, installation, and disassembly work. They also evaluate the performance of equipment and machinery. Industrial engineers are less likely to execute the actual maintenance work. Rather they are involved in the planning and implementation of maintenance activity. The two will often collaborate with other maintenance workers, such as maintenance managers, to create the ideal maintenance strategies for a specific facility or asset. Maintenance managers oversee the maintenance department.

Industries That Utilize Industrial Maintenance

Industrial maintenance is required anywhere that specialized machinery is being operated. Some industries are more reliant on it than others, such as:

  • Energy
  • Aviation
  • Construction
  • Automotive
  • Industries that require printing for things such as labels (food, medical, cosmetic, and publishing)

As is true of any maintenance program, industrial maintenance is best performed with the help of facility maintenance and management software. These programs can track an asset’s history of breakdowns and prior repair work. This is invaluable information for industrial maintenance mechanics who perform work on machinery and equipment or industrial engineers who devise strategies for how to best utilize machinery and equipment.
